Hi there, nice to have found a forum that will help me with my quest to build my own car...I'm from Somerset, Nr Taunton. Have always dreamt of building my own car and with the help from work (I run a CNC workshop) and you guys, hopefully I will accomplish my own Roadster!

Welcome aboard Kenny, I reckon that CNC shop will come in handy :D

Have you any plans for your build yet?

Hi Kenny
Are you planning a Haynes or another 7 variant?

Cheers guys, I have found plans for the Haynes Roadster which I think I am going to use and was quite tempted to go down the MX5 route, but the more research I have done the more tempted I am by lobbing in a V6 or V8. Whatever route I do go down, I'm going to have to buy parts instead of getting a full donor car due to lack of space, I'm going to use my kitchen and front garden to build in haha. Thankfully the bay of e throws up some bargains now and then and I have a good breakers not too far away.

A lot of people build with a view to changing the engine later on after IVA, its all personal preference of course but I'm choosing to build it as I want it from the start.

I'm building out front as well

I have always driven Vauxhalls and I love them. After seeing how much I could get an Omega V6 for, it sort of has made my mind up. It does mean possibly going with an auto box but I'm not too bothered. I had an Astra with an auto and it was great fun, especially the sports button!

Do I need to add extra strength to the Roadster chassis to accept the extra weight or is it just a case of seeing and then possibly worrying about it..

I'm going with 2mm wall box section as opposed to the 1.6mm book spec which seems to be a fairly common upgrade, although some will scorn it due to the extra weight.

I thought about going with the original auto and trying to fit paddle shifters but when I was giving the donor a good runaround I found it tended to hold on to the gears too much before changing down. Could possibly have looked into getting the gearbox ecu remapped but ended up finding a manual box.
